Creative Art - Geniuses

Fathers in Guyana are enjoying the art of making toys out of scraps and leftovers. For instance an old piece of wood can be carved into several beautiful toy guns, so kids can enjoy a game of ‘war-break’. Another example is that an old fallen coconut branch can be chopped and trimmed into several excellent cricket bats. These bats can play both sponge and ‘hard’ balls. Other toys made are scooters and go-carts that can use to race on smooth concrete surfaces. Boats are made from all kinds of recycle plastic containers. Radios are made from discarded old telephones. Small cigarette boxes and soda corks are used to make trucks and cars.

This to some extent shows how resourceful Guyanese are given all the constraints they are faced with. However this creative art, which was much richer long ago, is slowly dieing out and just a few resourceful families are keeping up this beautiful tradition alive.

World Cup Fever

WORLD CUP FEVER!!!
Cricket lovers from the world at large will be converging on the Caribbean and Guyana to watch over ten cricketing nations compete for supremacy in "one day" competitions. The West Indies will have to face the likes of formidable competitors like Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, India and England, to name just a number of the teams. The hosting nations have invested millions of dollars all in the hope of showcasing their countries whilst the games are played and broadcasted.
In all this Digicel will be playing an important role in promoting these games. Unlike in the past where arch rival Cable and Wireless was at the helm for West Indies cricket. Digicel recently set up camps in several caribbean countries as well as in Guyana.
Star cricketer Brian C Lara will be leading the West Indies to vie for the coveted title as World Champions. Laura game has deteriorated significantly over the past few years and his leadership qualities has been severely criticised for seriously lacking in many areas. Rumors has it however, that Laura eye sight is poor. Given this one is left to wonder why play Lara then?
Lara's deputy Ramaresh Sarwan is extremely susceptable to 'real fast' bowling. In the last world cup in South Africa, Sarwan was hit by lightening quick delivery behind the head, where he passed out. And had to be rushed off to hospital. recently in Guyana in the Carib Bear competition he was struck by a another quickie from Fidel Edwards and suffered a fractured finger.
Not to focus on the weaknesses only for West Indies it has been claimed that West Indies has one of the best batting line up on paper. This line up include, Christ Gale, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Marlon Samuels, Dwane Bravo, Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Darren Ganga. Yet this team has only on a few occassions risen to the occassion, and prove they can beat any team on a given day.
I will write about Guyana in my next blog.

Defeat is inevitable!

Has President GW Bush entangled himself and the United States in two wars(Afghanistan & Iraq) to the extent that he cannot unentangle himself without a loss cause and much shame? Most folks seems to think so. George W Bush don't seem to have any idea how he can extricate the United States without loosing face around the world. He knows many nations including France and the Arab countries in general would heap tons of scorn and redicule on him for being a looser.
About four years a ago when I was defending GWB a former minister from a small Caribbean Territory said indignantly "Bush is a fool." This is hard to argue against today. Back then I tried valiantly to defend him, on the grounds we need a sherriff to tackle the terrorists that were running wild globally.
Getting back to the wars however, one must try to understand the culture of the moslems fanatics with respect to death and this should be studied carefully before one should attempt to engage in warfare with them. History has shown that many battles have been fought in these arabs lands. Bush seems totally focused on the war on terror without considering any long term enagagement consequences.
Eventually it would be a sad day when the United States finally tuck tail and runs away from yet what would be termed another defeat. The real cost of loosing would be the innocent lives lost for which no price tag can be determined. Their blood shed for a lost cause.
GWB in the mean time will retire like former president Bill Clinton, but unlike BC, GWB will be repeating himself of "his convictions" to choice crowds. The democrats, more than likely to win the next election, will be the ones entrusted with disengaging the US from two wars. We will have to wait and see.
Sometimes getting into trouble is easy, but getting out is like trying to climb out of a well on a greasy pole. From every indication things are getting really messy in Afghanistan and Iraq and there is no evidence of any improvement to come. So the best bet would be to leave NOW, lick whatever wounds are there, and bail out, like a pilot whose airplane is going down.
It is braver to make a tough decision to retreat than to persist and loose innocent lives when there is no victory in sight.

Be Happy Without The Riches!

Riches. Why are we killing ourselves getting riches when we know with absolute certainty that we are not taking any of it with us to the other shores? Eh? Right now it is after 5.30 and I am bone tired for studying late and early this morning for my CPA exams, yet I know I have to go home get back toiling away with the midnight light. Why isn't contentment an integral part of our education system and just adequate survival is the sufficient evil thereof.
Two and sometimes even three jobs we kill ourselves doing. Running and huffing and puffing, out of breath and dying and still no rest on our agenda with each passing day. And in all this the riches we crave for puts on wings and flies away leaving us discontent and desolate. And mounting frustrations sees us whipping a frenzy against our spouses and children until everything we labored to build suddenly disintegrates before our very eyes. Now what?
The secret to happiness is what we already possess and it is staring us everyday everywhere around us. Can you see it? Yes you can. Trees, birds, sounds, sunshine, our wives and our children, friends, relatives, strangers, fresh fruits, and so much more. Surely we can do some gardening, play a game of soccer or cricket or basketball, anything we fancy. Then we can smile, laugh, relax, rejoice, give praise to Almighty God. Yeah my friends this is real happiness.
Why go the long difficult route to happiness when we already have the shortcut? And even perhaps already there. The man who comes on vacation after wearing himself out is just trying to get a piece of our everyday live here that so much of us, who are poor enjoys. Have a fiesta with your wife everyday and then run and play with the kids. Make some noise.
Be happy.

Boca Juniors Worlds Most Renown Soccer Club!

BOCA JUNIORS: One of the world's best soccer club team, is a must see for any die hard soccer fan. A game between Boca and River is listed as one of the top 50 things a person should do before death. Merely watching the game on TV paralyzes one with heart pounding excitement. The fans at a Boca game gives the impression that they are all over the edge, with drums pounding and riverberating songs echoing out a sardine packed stadium.
Who would have imagined that the daughters of the President of the mighty United States would donned themselves with Boca Juniors uniforms, and sit in the world best known stadium, "The Bombanera" watching Palacio(the rat) and Palermo weave their magic on the field as Boca win yet another game.
Someone recently admitted, he only lives for Sunday afternoon, when Argentine soccer featuring Boca is broadcasted on Fox Soccer Channel. My eldest son who plays soccer for his school in Johnson City, however is a Barca fan. He idolizes Ronoldhino, the Brazilian wizard. Yet Barca games seems to pale in comparison to the world renown Boca Juniors. In fact more than eighty percent of the Argentine population follows every move Boca makes.
If any of you can tell me how to get tickes to take my family and go see a Boca game please let me know.

BVI - Like a luscious Woman

Right: A view from Writer's Verandah (Patio).

The BVI is looking as spritely as a beautiful woman. She is blossomming into a fine well developed and well rounded beauty. And a lot of eyes are feasting on her. She is wealthy and has and all the qualities her suiting tourist have demanded over the years. So they keep pouring in from everywhere around the world to court her, in large droves, especially from the many cruise ships, that keep sailing in, sometimes two to three daily, landing at the Road Town dock.

The beaconing lazy blue and sometimes green water hemming the many white sandy beaches invitingly calls to come picnic and enjoy the day. This makes me wish my wife and kids were here. Anyway if you are more daring you can enjoy the roaring waves at Josiah's Bay. So Buckle on your seatbelt and grab your surfboard it is time to holiday in the BVI.

Keen Gibson - Bulahoos

Keen Gibson - Bulahoo

You would thought that someone with Keen Gibson stature would not have stooped to the gutter level politics, by demeaning Hindus. I am not a Hindu, but from what I know about Hindus, they live peacefully and mind their own business. Yet Gibson has claimed she has researched some terms relating to Hindus, such as "Dharma", etc. and has given the words a slant that suits her mediocre research. And this has sent a lot of emails flying back and fort leaving a trail of bitter feelings among Guyanese on sites such as Guyanese@yahoo.com, etc.

Given Keen Gibson hatred of indians, just ignore her wild and unsubstantiated claims, and treat them for what they are --"bulahoos"!
